the high king of naxorus
The night air was thick, more bearable when the breeze drifted through the trees and stirred at the humidity. The sky was inky blue, sprinkled with bright stars and an ever brighter moon. The Red King stood at the edge of the water and looked down, barely able to see the elaborate markings on his face in the dim light. He could see Vadik in himself, particularly in the faded brightness after dusk. Their facial structures were the same, manes similar. Even his build was reminiscent of his long dead father. Magnus hoped and prayed that was where the similarities would always end... but there would be a flicker of doubt in the back of his mind for as long as his heart was beating.
The lion had decided to take a stroll (as per his mother's well-intentioned advice) and had found himself on the outskirts of the city after he'd navigated through the streets. There he decided to relax and enjoy the serenity of the pools. He let the tensions of being king melt away under the stars and watched the sunset melt into night. With a sigh he sat down, draping his forelegs into the water and sending ripples through his reflection. The cool liquid soothed his paws, drawing a contented noise from his large chest. "It appears as though I need to make this trip more often," he mused to himself.
There was no sound or warning aside from the pulse of energy from his soul stone. The circlet felt suddenly hot as the shockwave traveled from the stone and into his head. It was not the soft, calming energy that let him know when his mother was near. No, this was something else entirely. Magnus was on his feet in an instant, whipping around to stare into the dark tangles of the jungle. Not mother, not Seda. Not Cadoc or it would be glowing red. Who in the world...? A roar thundered from his throat, shattering the stillness in the night air. "Show yourself," he demanded, tail flicking behind his haunches. Prepared for a fight, the Red King had no idea who was really there in the shadows.

Reeves had felt a great weight lifted from his shoulders after he had spoke to his mother about his current predicament. All his life he had hid this secret away from his family, not wanting any of them to doubt his loyalty and his heart. It had taken all of his strength not to tell them but now, with his brother reigning king of Naxorus and his mother and sister leading the Lucis Temple, they were his best bets at finding the master of the soul stones. For they would hear far more than he would on his own and he needed to find someone who had seen all sorts of different things when it came to the stones. For he wasn't like his siblings at all, his powers were almost uncontrollable and while it was very possible that his fear of becoming like his father was what made his powers so shaky, he knew he had to get them under control before he could return to his family.
His paws carried him through the jungle on the long journey from the Lucis Temple to the palace of Naxorus. His mind began to drift to where he would go after he'd sorted out his powers. Would he join his mother and Seda at the Lucis Temple? Perhaps. They would be able to help him grow and learn his new abilities as they came on. But what about Magnus? He was all alone in Naxorus with no queen to rule by his side. Perhaps Reeves could join Magnus in Naxorus. He'd grown away from his brother a bit but that was for foolish reasons he didn't plan to let get in the way of their relationship any longer. He didn't know if there was much he could do to help his brother rule Naxorus but he would offer him his help.
Shaking his head a bit, he pulled himself back to the present. He was getting much too far ahead. All he should be focusing on right now was finding the master of the soul stones and getting his powers under control. Pulling himself back into the moment, Reeves let his light blue eyes scan his surroundings before quickly realizing where he was. He was coming up on the Katharos Pools that lay behind the palace of Naxorus. This would be a good place to rest before he tried to sneak his way into the palace to see his brother. After all, he'd promised his mother he would visit Magnus before he left to travel in search of the master of the soul stones. He wasn't sure why his mother wanted him to visit Magnus so badly but he was sure there was a good reason for it. His mother had never led him astray.
It appears as though I need to make this trip more often. A voice reached Reeves' rounded ears in the night and he pricked them to try and catch more but nothing more came. Lowering his frame a bit, he slunk through the undergrowth, wanting to see who he was up against before he decided whether he would make his presence known. Show yourself. Before Reeves could take another step, the voice of a male reached him and he froze. How could they have possibly known he was there? He was still hidden and upwind. Confused, he peeked his head over the top of a fern before his eyes came to rest on his brother Magnus.
His muscles relaxed and he sighed a bit before pushing through the fern leaves and stepping out into the open area around the pools. "It's only me... Reeves." He spoke calmly, soft smile on his face though his light blue eyes scanned his brother's expression, trying to figure out what his reaction would be to seeing him after so long.

The King's eyes darted back and forth across the leaves, looking for any sign of movement in the shadows and silver splotches of moonlight. His posture was commanding, thick mane rustling in the breeze. Seconds ticked by as he waited for a response, growing more and more uneasy by the second. Was this some sort of ambush? Had the criminals organized themselves to this sort of level yet?
There was movement to one side and his golden eyes snapped to the disturbance as another lion slowly melted from the shadows. A male, with light colored fur and an easy smile on his face. It's only me... Reeves. The King's jaw fell slack, eyes widening and ears tilted back in surprise. Reeves... it can't be... Emotions rolled over him so powerfully that he nearly stumbled and sank his claws into the soft dirt to keep from losing his balance. Disbelief. Bewilderment. Relief. Joy. Every marking on his body glowed softly, fueled by the happiness and confusion that was flooding his chest. His brother. He was home.
"Reeves!" Magnus leapt into motion, closing the distance between them in an instant. He tackled the other lion, paws around his shoulders as he grabbed him tightly. "Brother! You're alive!" He laughed with all of his heart, feeling happier than perhaps he had since the other lion had disappeared. The Red King pulled back to look at his sibling, heavy paws still placed on the other cat's shoulders. "Oh, Reeves. I thought I'd never see you again. After Cadoc kidnapped you... I feared the worst. But you look wonderful! And you're here. You're really here." He shook his head in disbelief before taking a step back to apologize. "Forgive me. I was convinced that the criminals had come to teach me a lesson. You can imagine what a relief this is." He laughed again, eyes sparkling brightly. He felt a bit embarrassed, not letting Reeves have a word in edgewise, but he'd truly believed that he'd never see his brother again.

Reeves felt a bit awkward as he stood in front of the mighty lion his brother had grown up to become. He smiled sheepishly, glancing away before bringing his light blue gaze back to the king. Reeves! Brother! You're alive! Once Magnus had finally gotten over the shock of seeing Reeves, he filed the space between them quickly, tackling the smaller male with a hug. An amused and carefree chuckle bubbled up from Reeves' chest as he too let his forearms wrap around the shoulders of his brother before sitting upright once more. Wide smile still on his face, they both straightened up and Reeves tried to sit up as tall as he could to make himself look just as big as the large king Magnus had become.
Oh, Reeves. I thought I'd never see you again. After Cadoc kidnapped you... I feared the worst. But you look wonderful! And you're here. You're really here. When Magnus spoke, Reeves felt his smile fade a bit and he rubbed the back of his neck with his front paw, glancing at the ground for a minute before turning his gaze back on the king. "Uh... Cadoc didn't... kidnap me..." He answered, searching his brother's face for his reaction to this new piece of information. Magnus finally sat back for a moment so he could look Reeves over and speak to him a bit easier.
Forgive me. I was convinced that the criminals had come to teach me a lesson. You can imagine what a relief this is. His smile broadened a bit at the king's next words and he chuckled a bit. "Nah, nobody could pull one over on you. I know I never could." He teased, feeding off of Magnus' giddy mood at their reunion. It was definitely nice to see his brother and while they may have had their struggles when they were younger and Magnus had tried to take over as a father figure, Reeves realized how much he cared about his brother and missed him. He especially missed being able to joke around with the male though it felt strange to joke around with the king of Naxorus, even if he was still his brother.

Magnus felt his brother's legs wrap around his shoulders in return and smiled even more widely. Family was everything; he'd always known that. And even Larue had been lecturing him on the power of love, in all forms, and what it could overcome. He sighed happily, imagining how excited his mother would be when he told her that he'd run into Reeves. As the two lions pulled apart and sat back to look at each other, he couldn't help but feel as though Reeves was his equal more than just his little brother.
The Red King tensed slightly as Reeves looked away, suddenly sheepish at the mention of Cadoc. His first thought was wildly inaccurate, and he felt his jaw open slightly in shock. He chose to go with Cadoc! There was a ripple of pain as that idea rolled through his body. Uh... Cadoc didn't kidnap me... But as soon as his brother met his eyes he knew that that couldn't be true. Reeves had never quite been like him, but there was no way that he would follow the dark path Cadoc had departed on. So why had he left? Brow furrowed slightly, the King tilted his head to one side. "I don't understand. If Cadoc didn't kidnap you, why did you leave? I... I've lived all this time waiting to have a chance to get revenge on him for taking you away." He cleared his throat and looked down at his large paws, scratching idly at the earth. If he'd been wrong about Cadoc taking Reeves, what other mistakes or misjudgements had he made along the way? The King pulled his gaze back up. "It's a relief though, definitely. I'm very glad to hear he had nothing to do with it."
Nah, nobody could pull one over on you. I know I never could. Magnus chuckled, shrugging his shoulders and feeling the locks of his mane move in response. "Gotta have sharp instincts to live in the city, you know. Particularly in the market stalls. Sometimes they hoodwink you and you've bought six jars of spices and two zebra roasts before you know what's happened." Another chuckle left his mouth, this one a bit more sheepish as he tried to forget his own trading mistakes.

Reeves had never felt quite up to Magnus' level. He'd always been the smallest of the three brothers and was about the same size, if not a tad larger than their sister Seda. Either way, he tried to not let it get to him, after all there wasn't much he could do about his size. He'd been gifted with the leaner genes of his mother and not the bulky, sturdy ones of his father. Either way, it was strange to see Magnus again after so long, especially now that they were both older and more mature. It almost seemed as if they had never been apart.
The giddy excitement that had been in between the two lions seemed to fade away a bit as Reeves spoke and his words hit his brother. He could see the mixture of emotions spreading across Magnus' features as he tried to guess at the real reason why Reeves had vanished. I don't understand. If Cadoc didn't kidnap you, why did you leave? I... I've lived all this time waiting to have a chance to get revenge on him for taking you away. Guilt began to bubble up from deep within Reeves' belly forcing his eyes to look away from his brother once more and turn to the ground, ashamed for leaving without explaining himself all that time ago. "It's... my powers." He began, shifting his weight from paw to paw as he dared to glance up at his brother.
It's a relief though, definitely. I'm very glad to hear he had nothing to do with it. Nodding slowly, Reeves glanced up at Magnus before clearing his throat to explain himself some more. "I left because I can't control my abilities. I never could. Not like you or Seda or Cadoc.." He went on, shrugging a bit as if this fact hadn't terrified him his entire life. "I didn't want to accidentally hurt anyone because I couldn't control them. I didn't know what they could do. I didn't want to be like... like father..." He added, dropping his hind end to the ground and slumping a bit.
Gotta have sharp instincts to live in the city, you know. Particularly in the market stalls. Sometimes they hoodwink you and you've bought six jars of spices and two zebra roasts before you know what's happened. A soft smile lifted the corners of Reeves mouth at the thought of his brother coming home with all the unneeded supplies he'd been fooled into buying. "Speaking from experience?" He teased playfully, nudging his brother in the shoulder.

The Red King watched his brother, waiting for an answer with confusion written across his face. All this time, all these nights spent looking at the moon and plotting his revenge... it hadn't even been needed. It was a relief, of course, that Reeves had been safe all this time and not tainted from contact with Cadoc. But it also made the big lion feel lost. Perhaps his dark brother was not as bad as he had thought? One thing was for certain. He needed to find him.
It's... my powers. Magnus grew still and tilted his head slightly, furrowing his brow That was certainly not what he had expected. "Your powers?" He shifted slightly. I left because I can't control my abilities. I never could. Not like you or Seda or Cadoc. I didn't want to accidentally hurt anyone because I couldn't control them. I didn't know what they could do. I didn't want to be like... like father. Magnus sighed and shook his head, the weight of what Reeves must have been dealing with pressing against his chest. "Reeves, I... I had no idea." Sympathy was evident in his amber eyes. "I'm so sorry. I can't imagine what that must have been like for you." He sighed again, but then smiled as his ears perked up. "If there is anyone who can train you, my associates should be able to find them. Just give me some time." Searching for a soul stone expert gave the Red King something to strive for for the first time in a while.
