FALL - The temperature is starting to fall a bit as it starts to cool off. The sun isn't as hot and the relief from the heat is much needed.

The sun's ray intersected the winged cross in the sky. She cast a shadow onto the Army Legion under her, which brought a few of the newer cadets out of their homes in worry and roared for her to identify herself. Smiling, Larue showed them that she was no harm by circling around the area before landing in front of them, folding her golden wings to her side and addressing them. "I'm sorry. I did not realize this is a restricted flight zone." she joked. "N-no mam!" One of them fumbled with his words in embarrassment once he realized who she was. "We w-were just um...making sure-" the other started, looking worried. What was the punishment for being rude to the King's mother? It had to be severe. "Thank you for being so vigilant." she replied with a nod. "It puts me at ease to know soldiers like you two will be watching the palace." The soldiers seemed a little more relaxed and happy to hear her words, still thanking her with scrambled words before returning to their homes with their heads low in hopes that no one would see them. Larue just laughed a little to herself, letting the wings disappear and walking the rest of the way. The wind carried every step under her foot as usual.
She walked up to the palace and admired it. The vines and heavy leaves seemed to have fuzed themselves to the unnatural structure within the jungle. They held the scent of her son...the king. She smiled as she walked through the palace, remembering the memories of motherhood. She couldn't even say that they grew up so fast; she was with them every step and every breath, and it felt like she remembered all of them. And it was so much to remember that a different memory could fill every single void in her heart and she would still have some to enjoy in her pastimes.
And thats why she was here now. She settled at the door of the boardroom, letting him wrap up whatever business he had with his general and colonel. She nodded and greeted them, but her eyes was focused on the proud and powerful lion who stayed in the chambers afterwards. "And how goes the king?" She finally said. Her voice echoed throughout the building and into the open sky. Larue walked forward, nuzzling her son just as she would as if he was still a small cub. He certainly wasn't, and that was a good thing. He had grown into a respectable leader and a handsome lion, but in these moments when they were alone, it was almost like the seclusion of the cavern when he was much, much smaller.

the high king of naxorus
The Red King sat at the head of a heavy mahogany table, elbows and forelegs stretching out before him. He tapped absentmindedly at the surface as he listened to the tiger and jaguar take turns filling him in. It had been a rather busy week in the city, apparently. There were rumors of some dark seekers trying to organize crime in the lower districts. The army was doing well, though, and Nero had devised a new rotation for the scouts, which was good news. Magnus was attentive, asking questions about the new recruits and what armor adjustments they would need from the smiths. New helmets, so more money from the crown. It would be paid for by the taxes, of course, but finances were always a stressor for the King.
There was a small surge of energy from the circlet atop his head, and he knew in an instant that his mother must be close. His soul stone always reacted to her proximity, where he allowed himself to be much less like a ruler and much more like a cub. "Thank you both. Nero, go ahead and send the orders for the helmets. Have him make one for a test though, and see to it that the straps fit better before he does the rest. We'll have council again next week, as always. But I think Pathos is having roast zebra to celebrate something or other, so come hungry." He smiled at the two other cats as they said their farewells, striding out of the council room and into the rest of the palace.
He visibly relaxed as they left his presence, pulling his paws up and rubbing them across his eyes and the permanent red markings etched into his hide. When he moved his feet his mother was standing there in the doorway, soft and golden with her ever-calming presence. And how goes the king? He smiled warmly at her and sighed, meeting her in the middle of the floor and pressing his head against hers. He loved being King, loved the honor that came with it and the ability to protect a whole city of cats. But sometimes he simply missed being his mother's son; being an innocent cub. Magus rested his heavy head atop hers, reluctant to pull away. They were both busy cats, and he wished he could see her more often. "I'm doing well, mother. How are you?" He pulled away as he asked the question, ducking his head so that he could look into her eyes, as if checking to see if she was really okay.
Despite being so busy, Magnus always had an energetic air to him. He looked alert and vigilant all the way up until he closed his eyes to sleep. He most certainly got it from her, but the rest of him was a spitting image of his father. When he rested his head on hers, she could hear that powerful heartbeat. Larue closed her eyes and went back to a place where she was curled into a tight "c" and fall asleep listening to the rhythm of four of them. She'd be lying to herself if she said that she didn't miss those days. There seemed to be all the time in the world to just do what she wanted, and what she wanted was to watch her cubs grow. Who would have thought that eventually they would be all done with growing?
He pulled back to make sure she was okay, as Magnus had always been so sincere when he asked questions. Even the little ones like "how are you?" came from the heart. Sure, she was his mother and he had all the reason to be concerned about her, but his earnestness was something that extended to the kingdom and those in it. "I'm very happy today. Do you know why?" Larue asked with almost a chime to her voice. She smiled with a brightness in her eyes that almost was that of a cub's. She didn't really expect him to know the answer. She was probably the only one who would calender all of those little events in 15 years of living like they were extraordinary milestones. "I remember years ago, today was the day that I was tired. I did not want to wake up super early to catch a large meal, so I told you and your siblings to go catch a rabbit to nibble on until later. Larue started matter-of-factly. She chuckled a little after saying it. She wasn't embarrassed to admit that there were some low points in motherhood. Just like no cub is a perfect angel, no mother is completely motherly 100% of the time. "But you wouldn't accept that, and you decided today would be the day you would lead a hunt." She added.
"I was curious to see how exactly were you going to pull this off, so I decided to follow close by and watch. Of course, you didn't get it the first few tries. You four hadn't put on quite enough weight yet and bongo antelope aren't so weak or slow when mom isn't already in the process of pulling it down. Seda was tired and your brothers were getting impatient with you. I am not ashamed to admit I found it comical." Larue chuckled a little. She could almost see them silently bickering, trying not to scare off the few animals that were still there but their irritability rising at a level their voices were trying to meet. After the thought had passed, Larue's face turned to a more thoughtful expression. Her head tilted a bit and her voice lowered. "But you didn't come back without anything to show for it. You came back with a rather plump sambar doe and we ate rather well that morning..."
Once the story was done, the smile returned to her face as she looked around the palace, letting out a content sigh. "That was the day I told myself to never think "he isn't ready yet" with you. And now look at this; my son has a kingdom." Oh, how Vadik would be so proud of him...

the high king of naxorus
There was a peaceful feeling that overcame the Red King as he was cloaked in his mother's smell. From the first moments of his life she had been his provider and protector, and while he had not witnessed the darkness that had seeped into his father's soul, he had certainly felt it. And he knew, without a doubt that his mother had killed him only to protect her cubs. It had more of an impact on him than she probably knew, and drove him to do the right thing, even if it was painful.
As he ducked his head to look at her Magnus noticed the happiness in her expression and the smile that crinkled around her eyes. He couldn't help but return it with one of his own. Seeing his mother happy made him happy. As it had always been. I'm very happy today. Do you know why? He was silent for a moment, furrowing his brow and searching through the dregs of his memories. It wasn't anyone's birthday... He looked back up at her and shook his head, giving her an apologetic smile and flicking his tail. I remember years ago today... ...until later. He smiled as she spoke, although the particular instance didn't ring a bell. Being a mother of four rambunctious cubs was bad enough. Doing it alone was truly impressive. But you wouldn't accept that, and you decided today would be the day you would lead a hunt. He felt the memory pulling at him suddenly, and it was as if it had all happened only hours before. He could hear his own raspy youngster voice and imagined himself once more with only a tuft instead of a mane.
I was curious... ...comical. He was listening attentively but his eyes were unfocused, lost in the memory. Seda had been laying on the ground on her back, feigning extreme exhaustion because their first attempts had been so unsuccessful. She had a paw draped across her eyes dramatically. Reeves was bouncing back and forth between getting distracted by colorful birds and worrying that perhaps Seda really was too tired to continue. Cadoc had been bossy, insisting that he could catch an antelope by himself if the rest of the group wasn't 'causing a disruption'. Magnus chuckled loudly, shaking his head and pulling his mind back into the present. It had certainly been an eventful day.
But you didn't come back without anything to show for it. You came back with a rather plump sambar doe and we ate rather well that morning. He sat down on his haunches, grinning widely and shaking his head. His mother's memories were like a well. "Thank you for reminding me of that. I'd forgotten. It was so hot so early that day, and Reeves had to drag Seda back home because she was insistent that she would never walk again." He laughed again, making a note to remind his sister of that occurrence the next time he saw her. A heavy paw traveled up to his face to wipe away a bit of moisture from the fond memory and the amusement.
He followed his mother's gaze as she looked around, still smiling softly. That was the day I told myself to never think 'he isn't ready yet' with you. And now look at this; my son has a kingdom. Magnus looked at her affectionately, ears back in humble gratefulness that he only displayed around her. "Thank you, mother. For the story and for never doubting me. My biggest fear is letting you down, especially with the city." He cast his eyes down at his paws, rubbing the pads gently over the smooth marble floor. "Sometimes it's surreal to think that they're all really at my command." He raised his eyes back to her, thankful that he had the opportunity for a moment to be Magnus, Larue's son, instead of Magnus the King of Naxorus. Her and Seda were the only two in the kingdom that he could afford to be doubtful around.
Hearing Magnus laughed brought so much joy to Larue's heart. She felt like she was years younger again from the sound. His laughter was rich like his father's when he was younger. These were the new memories being forged with her son. Coming to visit the herson, the king, and having moments of solitude where he was back to being just her son. She loved to visit him and recall stories, sit and talk about Naxorus, or really anything he felt the need to speak about. As long as it meant that she was making sure he wasn't sacrificing any joy and laughter day-to-day life can bring for his duties. She couldn't help but wonder...
She looked back to Magnus. How strange it was to see a simple change in posture that could transform even a king into a young boy again. "As long as you are doing what makes you happy, and what makes you happy can make other good spirits happy, you can never let me down." Larue purred, sweeping back over to her son to nuzzle him again. Of course she would have faith in her children. All mother's who truly loved their children did. All they could ask for is for the child to believe it is true and live life with that empowerment. She was blessed to have cubs that took it above and beyond.
Larue then walked to one of the windows where the light of the sun was shining brilliantly through. She looked out to the land with a face that wasn't too joyous nor was it somber. She was simply examining the view. "I pray every night that you will never have to test the depth of those commands. Just know that if that day does come, you are not alone. I don't want you to ever feel like you are lonely. Thats why I worry about how much time you spend in this big empty place," her tail casually flickered as if pointing to the vastness of the room. "-When you could take a little break and truly appreciate how beautiful your kingdom is."
A smile crept back on her face as she not-so-subtly-added; "And maybe find a face among your citizens beautiful enough to represent it by your side."

Talking with his mother, having her calming presence in his palace and being able to share his fears with her brought an almost overwhelming sense of peace over the Red King. Everyone else expected him to be strong, including himself. But his mother would always love him, even if he chose to be a little scared around her. As long as you are doing what makes you happy, and what makes you happy can make other good spirits happy, you can never let me down. Affection bubbled in his chest and he smiled, instantly less worried just by her soft words. She moved forward again to nuzzle him and he returned the motion, tail flicking happily behind his haunches. "Thank you."
After their embrace the lioness walked over to the windows and Magnus followed her. He placed his forepaws on the sill, eyes flicking between the small figures wandering through the city. I pray every night that you will never have to test the depth of those commands. Just know that if that day does come, you are not alone. His face grew serious and he nodded once, even though his gaze was still aimed at the streets and not in her direction. He had the best troops he could ask for, and knowing that they all shared the urge to protect others was insanely comforting to him. I don't want you to ever feel like you are lonely. That's why I worry about how much time you spend in this big empty palace. A smile broke on his lips. When you could take a little break and truly appreciate how beautiful your kingdom is. He sighed knowingly through his grin. "Yes, mother."
And maybe find a face among your citizens beautiful enough to represent it by your side. He laughed heartily, turning to see her face but shaking his head. Locks of his mane fell over his forehead and eyes, making him look a bit younger and more handsome. "Mother! Such a hurry to marry me off." He laughed again, amused by her bold hint. She wanted him to find someone and settle down, but he was always so busy that he truly had little time to pursue romantic interests. Although he probably make a little more time than he admitted. It was a daunting idea, though, dating. "Perhaps I'll go for a walk sometime soon."
The city was more vibrant and flourishing than any lion pride she had ever seen. Her current view was that of the aristocracy. Cubs of all kinds of cats could be seen playing in front of their homes or walking alongside their mother, who was heading towards the market. If she had to choose her favorite part of the city, it would have to be the market place. Busy, loud, chaotic, and a bit messy it was, but it also was the melting point in the city. There, cubs from opposite ends of the agora could form an everlasting bond while both mothers did what the needed to survive; whether it was by, sell, or barter. Her heart went out to the poor, however. Larue had considered opening a relief service in the temple for the good poor people of Naxorus, but the temple was already so busy as it was.
A little color blossomed onto her face as she joined Magnus in laughter. Of course her son wasn't seeing anyone; he wasn't even thinking of it until she had said something! The lion had a one-track mind like his father, and right now it was on bettering his city. Seda, Reeves, and herself were more of the daydreamers that moved from thought-to-thought each second. She both admired Vadik's focus and determination and feared it, and Magnus and Cadoc were the reflections of both sides of the extreme. She looked at him in wonder as he laughed and let loose. It reminded her of how young he was, which tore her in two different directions. She had come to realize that she was in the stage in motherhood where there would be many conflictions; her desire to keep her children close as cubs but her understanding that they wouldn't grow until she let go a little. Seda and Reeves were easy choices to make; always being like-minded and the fact that she could see the paths they would go in from the moment they were cubs. Magnus had the challenge of balancing personal growth with the growth of the community, and Cadok...
She decided she wouldn't dwell on thoughts like that for now." I'd like that. Walking always helped me sort the thoughts in my mind. Of course, those thoughts were usually the obsessively romantic thoughts of a lovesick youth, so there is a little difference between you and me." Larue chuckled. And when they had became mates, Vadik would start to take those walks with her. She pulled her paws up into the sill and sighed. A moment of silence passed before she finally spoke again with a little worry in her voice. "Magnus, I know it may not seem like it from what we have been through, and it might sound a little cliche, but I want you to know that that it's true; love conquers all. The love one can have for another-whether it be their parents, children, siblings, or mate- is more powerful than these stones that we carry. You do understand this, right?"

Magnus knew that he was still blushing beneath his fur as he shook his head at his mother. She knew him well; knew his tendencies to become too deeply immersed in whatever it was he was doing, and often neglect himself. Running the city was a full-time job and as much as he hated to admit it the Red King knew that he didn't quite relax enough. There were always decisions to be made, meetings to attend, citizens to hear... At the end of the day he was usually tired enough that he fell into his bed and was sleeping before his head hit the pillow. But he made a silent promise to her (and himself) that he would go for a walk in the city that evening. In truth, being down in the streets more often would probably help him in his reign as well.
As if she could hear his decision to go visit the streets, she spoke again. I'd like that. Walking always helped me sort the thoughts in my mind. Of course, those thoughts were usually obsessively romantic thoughts of lovesick youth, so there is a little difference between you and me. Magnus stiffened just slightly, watching his mother as the words left her lips, waiting to see of the mention of old memories was going to be painful for her. He was always on edge at the mention of his father and hated to see Larue hurt. But she laughed and relaxation rolled through his muscles, a chuckle swirling out with his breath. "Ah, Naxorus is my love for now, mother," he joked. Although truthfully at times it was like he was married to the city.
Magnus, I know it may not seem like it from what we have been through, and it might sound a little cliche, but I want you to know that it's true; love conquers all. His smiled faded slowly, a somber expression replacing it. Love was scary. Love was an intentional weakness; giving your heart to someone else with the knowledge that they could shred it and that they would become a target for your enemies simply by caring for you. It was something powerful and true, that much he knew from the way that he felt about his family and the lengths that he would go to protect them. But still it was intimidating. Love was far more powerful than any magic in anyone's soul stone. The love one can have for another- whether it be their parents, children, silblings, or mate- is more powerful than these stones that we carry. You do understand this, right? A small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth as his mother voiced the very thoughts he'd been entertaining. But he nodded, looking at her with eyes that held just a hint of the fear he felt about it. "I do, mother. It's a scary concept, that your very heart can exist outside of your body, but I know that it's true. I would do more for you or Seda than myself, and I know that it's the strongest force we can experience." He gazed back out into the city. "I guess that's why it makes me nervous."
Notes: Sorry this post is so late. I've been juggling rp site emergencies like crazy.
Larue sighed with relief when Magnus had responded to her with understanding. The day Cadoc left not only splintered the family, but Larue feared it casted many dark questions in the hearts of Reeves, Magnus, and Seda. She wanted to make it clear that despite what she had done, and despite all the sorrow the last stretch of his life had brought her, Larue still loved Vadik with every breath she breathes and believed he was a good lion. She could only hope that he remembered her words when the day came that Cadoc would return to them. She knew that Magnus was angry with him, and with every day that passed, his rage towards his brother grew. She could understand that, but she didn't want Magnus to hate him. Cadoc may be putting the stones before his family's love, but to hate him for it wouldn't be putting his family's love first either. She felt that when that day comes, it wouldn't have to end in death or tragedy, and Magnus understanding this much was the firs step to making sure it didn't.
Larue was confident that his answer was truthful as well. He had always been very transparent with her, so she had no reason to suspect he was just saying what she wanted to hear. Plus, his words about love seeped with a sort of sincerity that she was sure he would never admit to anyone else. She had always known that she had lacked the character needed to be a queen; she wore her heart on her paws even during her most guarded times. She wondered what it was like to be that way, and how stressful it must be to have things heavy on your heart. Or maybe part of being that way meant things didn't weigh you down as much as they would to someone like herself? She could only wonder...
Larue left the window sill to walk back over to her son's side and sat next to him. "You have all the right to be nervous about love, my son. Its a like a massive amorphous creature that can make even the biggest and strongest of cats feel like helpless little mice when they try to tackle it. I truly believe that everything around you can be molded by your will and determination, but love is something that will go a steadfast path no matter what you mold it to..." Larue said as her as her head tilted slightly in thought. She then began to smile brightly "Enough about that though. Tell me how Mrs.Naxorus faring?" Larue kidded.
